Starting the conversation: Disaster planning for community members with support needs and carers

It's National Carers Week, October 12–18, and at Plan C, we want to pause and thank carers, people with disability, support workers and allies who shared their experiences with us earlier this year. Your voices and stories have helped us understand more deeply what inclusive disaster planning really means, and how we can do better together.

Our upcoming workshops are a space to keep that conversation going — a chance to sit together, share ideas, and explore what staying safe and connected might look like in floods, fires or heatwaves.

Thank you again to everyone who continues to guide and shape this work. Together, we’re building communities that care for each other.

As a reminder, we warmly invite you to a free, inclusive and practical workshop series designed for people with disability, carers, support workers and allies. These sessions are an introduction – a chance to start the conversation and build confidence. They are not about completing your Person-Centered Emergency Preparedness (P-CEP) plan, but about exploring first steps and resources that can support you on the journey.

This is a welcoming space to share experiences, ask questions, and gain confidence in preparing for future emergencies.

In each session you’ll:

  • Identify personal risks in floods, fires and heatwaves

  • Learn practical steps to stay safe

  • Explore what to do when deciding to STAY or GO in a disaster

  • Discover resources that can help you later develop a personalised emergency action plan

Morning tea is included, and we’ll make space for connecting with others in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Thanks to the NSW Reconstruction Authority’s Supporting Spontaneous Volunteers Program for funding this initiative.
